Time Management Tips for College and University Students


The following tips will help you minimize your stress level and maximize your time for college fun.
  • Determine what’s most important to you. What’s your first priority? What can be dropped? Write an ordered list of what you need to get done. Prioritize the items on your list.
  • Control your distractions. Get rid of unnecessary jobs. Handle visitors well. For example, if you’re studying in your dorm room and don’t want to be bothered, lock your door. Avoid phone distraction by turning off your ringer and letting the answering machine catch your calls.
  • Eat a good breakfast. Not only is this good in resisting the pressure of the “freshman ten” (you burn your breakfast calories during the day), but a good breakfast gives your body carbohydrates and sugars to keep you energized.
  • When working in groups, delegate jobs efficiently. Often, people will hesitate to delegate jobs when working in groups, but take charge if there is not a designated leader.
  • Get the most out of class. Go to class and be on time. Be well-prepared and ready for discussion. If you class is 400 people in a lecture hall, read the material to be covered (check your syllabus or ask your professor for one). I promise this helps (plus, you’ll feel super smart when you recognize the terms your professor talks about).
  • One of the best things you can do to manage your time (then be managed by it) is to learn to say “no.” Say “no” to people asking you to play pool when you should study or when someone wants help with something at an inconvenient time for you. Suggest a different time to help when it’s more convenient for you.
  • Remember that there’s a time for everything. Sure, studying for a long time is good, but take breaks. Take power naps when your brain starts frying. If the weather’s nice, a good game of ultimate Frisbee also refreshes the tired mind.
Everyone’s different; some people like rigid day planners, others can deal with a simple note pad. Adjust these suggestions to best suit your needs.
With good time management skills, you’ll find yourself a happier and healthier person.

Master of Ceremonies Tips

Congratulations! You’ve been named Master of Ceremonies. It’s time to bask in the limelight. Well, for a minute or two, anyway. Because come the evening, all the responsibility for a successful event rests on your shoulders! So here are ten tips for hosting any function in which you’ll be introducing other speakers.

As host, you play a critical role in setting the tone for the evening. You have a very large influence on the success of the evening in general. The key thing is to prepare properly. Unless you’re a professional and do this all the time, you need to spend some time to reflect on your role, get a few notes together and do some background research on the people you’re introducing.

If this were a film, you’d be the Director. The position of Master of Ceremonies is a management position, to a certain extent. You’re responsible for getting the best out of the cast, as well as making sure the audience is happy.

1. Your role with the introduction is threefold:
a. Tell the audience why the speaker is appropriate and why they should want to hear from him/her.
b. Make the speaker feel like a million bucks
c. Set the tone for the evening.

 2. Don’t simply READ a prepared introduction. You need to bring it to life! Make it relevant!
I’ve often seen hosts take the lectern somewhat unprepared and introduce the keynote speaker by reading a prepared document. The level of commitment leaves a lot to be desired. It does absolutely nothing to build up the credibility of the speaker from the audience’s perspective or build up the speaker’s confidence. If your speaker has a prepared introduction of their own, get hold of it beforehand and become as familiar with it as possible. BUT, read it 'as is,' with energy. Too many speakers have had their opening humorous remark dismantled by a host that didn’t set them up as they had hoped.

3. Don’t make your introduction too long but do make it personal.
We don’t need to hear absolutely everything the speaker has ever done in life – just the things that are pertinent to our enjoyment of this particular speech or presentation. We’re not going to remember it all, so why bore us with it? I’ve seen hosts go on an on and on with credential upon credential. After a while, it becomes one big blur.

4. Start with building rapport.
As host, you’re responsible for warming up the audience, for setting the tone for the meeting. It’s your job to establish rapport. Is this going to be a serious get-together or a laugh-fest? It’s your job to set the stage so that the audience knows what to expect and how to react.

5. Lead the applause.
Another key responsibility is to lead applause. This is so the audience knows when to applaud and when not to. It also can add a lot of energy to the event. But that depends on you. The audience will react to you as their leader. If you lead them energetically, that’s how they’ll respond. If you lead the applause rather demurely, they’ll follow your lead.

6. Make sure the speaker has water and adjust the mic before you leave.
Your job is to make the speaker as comfortable as possible, and part of your responsibility is to make sure he/she has a fresh glass of water either on the lectern or on a small table to one side. Dry mouth is a common affliction of any speaker, no matter how experienced. Your thoughtfulness will be greatly appreciated and enhance the performance.

7. Don’t leave the lectern until the speaker arrives and remember to greet him/her.
Never leave the lectern unattended. Stay until your speaker arrives and then shake hands and offer a word of greeting or encouragement. The speaker is your guest and you are the host. Be the best host you can be! It will make a big difference.

8. Smile, project energy and confidence.
You set the tone for the evening. If it’s an awards dinner (an exciting event), you need to exude excitement. But whatever the mood, be sure the project confidence and energy. Smile. But make sure it’s natural. Have fun. This is your party and as a proper host, it’s your job to make it fun! Just by being up at the lectern, you will command the attention of your audience.

9. Bridge properly.
Once you start the introduction of your speaker, finish it. Don’t go off on a tangent and then finally get around to finishing it. Your guest needs to be introduced in a manner that will have the utmost meaning to the audience. If you begin with other club business, try to bridge into your first speaker appropriately. It always nice to tie your speaker to a particular interest or issue of the audience - to make the appearance of your guest all the more timely. After the speaker has finished, an appropriate wrap-up that reinforces the message of your speaker is always appreciated.

10. Make sure other stakeholders are aware of the agenda.
There’s nothing worse than not alerting other organizers of any particular needs of your speaker. For example, if your guest has visuals and needs the lights dimmed, make sure you have someone standing by to do so on an appropriate signal. All stage “business” should be worked out well beforehand and if it’s at all complicated or requires split second timing, be sure to rehearse it in advance.

Do these ten things and you’ll be known as an expert Master of Ceremonies.

My Master of Ceremony, Time Management and Positive!

Assalamualaykum and a very good day to each and everyone of you! ;) How do you do? Hope things are going well  by your side.

It’s been a busy week for me as I am involved  my college’s biggest project, which is college’s annual dinner where I was chosen to be an MC (Master of Ceremony) for Phase 1 Dinner (which was held on 26th April 2012) and being placed in Gifts and Presents Division for Phase 2 Dinner, which will be held on 5th May, 2012 (Oh gosh, the rehearsals will be starting from this Tuesday or Wednesday nights...). Rehearsals for Phase 1 Dinner was made one week straight from 8pm to 12-1 am where my whole schedule for this week is quite tight with many assignments and duties to be made as well.

In spite of been fatigued mentally and physically, experience gained are valuable indeed. I learnt that teamwork, commitment, responsibility, punctuality , endurance and patience must be blended in making a project thrive and successful. The event of Malam Penghargaan Dayasari (MPD) 2011/2012 (Kolej Kediaman Kelima) held quite successfully with good weather condition and every committee did their best for the night too!

For the MC part, one thing I learnt was that an MC need to be very good in controlling an event. One unexpected occasion occurred while we MCs (I was partnered with a Chinese guy) invited a group of performance for the opening ceremony, suddenly Isya’ prayers call (Azan) emerged on the scene from the college’s musolla.  We were silent quite awkwardly and I should have announced to the audience that we will pause the ceremony while waiting for the prayer’s call to stop. Instead, we MCs were silent and the Chinese guy not knowing that the prayer’s call were not ended yet, he announced that our ceremony will be continued when the prayer’s call are still taking place in the atmosphere. One thing for an MC to know is that he/she needs to be alert and prepared of anything unexpected occurance happened during an event. With many commitments and tasks, a student is required to spend their time wisely; or to be straight forward, need to have good time management. During this week which required me to be in good physical condition, I’ve keep remembering Al-Asr surah with the above meaning, where how exhausted and tiring it was to be involved in any projects and assignments or tasks, we should bear in mind that sincerity is the utmost important. At times, we might be having this thoughts of “What am I doing?”, “Why am I doing this again?”, or “I shoudn’t have applied this position before” when things gone so wrong and when one is under pressured. Sincerity is the only thing that could have make you feel at least calm and do things anyway.

A few sad events happened to me this week where I have been performing my Subuh prayers late, not been punctual to attend some lectures  and that I have been skipping breakfast and taken brunch instead. Being a student (or even NOT a student, hehe) breakfast is utmost vital. Energy obtained from breakfast will provide sufficent energy for our body to work all day. So, I’ll make attempts to have my breakfast everyday starting next week.  Lets let go of the bad thing and move on to good thing happening this week. I have been taking milk as suggested by my dear friend. I have always wanted to drink milk everyday before, but I always ended up didn’t. So, this is a good improvement Inia! Good job!

Empowerment, Scaffolding & SERU.

"If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime."

   The above quote is indeed conjuncted to a powerful yet domineering word of 'EMPOWERMENT'. In education field, this word is related to a term called 'scaffolding'; where to simply put it, let us bring our imagination to a construction building site, where we can see there will be lots of scaffolds (an ongoing built building will have the steel sticks around them; that what we called as scaffolds). We use scaffolds to support the in-progress building where then the scaffolds are removed once the constructions been done.

     In education, scaffolding can be said as a "support to the student in their early learning phase and then gradually removing that support system as the student masters the lesson. This parallels to how builders often apply scaffolding into what they build as support and framework, and gradually removes them when the building can already support itself." (Scaffolding In Education, 2012)

This empowerment or scaffolding could be related to the words of wisdom above, where if we give a man a fish today, he could only survive from the fish we've given them but when we teach a man to fish today, he could feed himself forever without us (teachers/instructors/facilitators). Back to the term 'scaffolding' used in education field of study, there is a man called Lev Vygotsky.  
This is him; Lev Vygotsky.
   He is a Russian psychologist who has develop a powerful theory which been ubiquitously used around the world. It is the theory of "Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)".


   Well guys, I will not be talking about this theory for this post but this is what SERU or Student Empowerment & Research Unit

 exactly is doing to empower University of Malaya's undergraduates (even postgraduates!).  SERU is part of the Student Affairs Division (Hal Ehwal Pelajar) that is responsibled for the design and implementation of soft skills programme to empower students to be in control of their own future.

I am here as a  REAL SAHABAT SERU (RSS) , where this is actually a peer coaching program to mould positive role models. We are the first batch of the one and only RSS in public universities all over Malaysia! 
This is so exciting as this kind of programme would endow students (especially University of Malaya's students)upon great skills as to become a leader in future. In  REAL SAHABAT SERU, I am placed in "U-Youth" team and really look forward into this programme and  to share knowledge as much as I could here, in "Inia's Legacy // Warisan Inia" blog! Hi Guys! This is some information about REAL SAHABAT SERU, University of Malaya, Malaysia.

Mission
SAHABAT SERU is a program to mould positive role model students through the development of soft skills and subsequently, be able to enhance and enrich the campus experiences of their fellow peers. It aims at developing peer coaches who are good listeners, encourage self-reflection and promote feedback through a guided one-on-one coaching exercise.
The selected students will experience specific workshops and supervised practical sessions to empower them as a SAHABAT SERU. Ultimately the program is designed in efforts to create a student-driven and student-friendly campus environment.
Responsibilities
SAHABAT SERU is a team of undergraduate students who are highly emphatic and feel obliged in supporting their peers who want to be leaders. A SAHABAT SERU shall encourage constant self-reflection and self-correction during peer coaching sessions. Briefly, coaches and coached students will walk through a planned action in addressing specific issue, observe, reflect and enhance the action until a solution is derived.
Role Functions
  • The SAHABAT SERU team will actively participate and contribute to all supervised practical sessions, workshops and other on-going activities offered through the program.
  • Providing one-on-one or small group peer coaching to students in a structured, regular team meetings in the subsequent semester.
  • Record challenges and experiences in a journal and transfer the information into a self-created blog. Position Commitment The SAHABAT SERU team is required to follow through workshops, supervised team meetings and peer coaching meetings planned in two semesters:
    - 17 March to 17 May
    - 10 Sept – 6 Nov 2012.
Program Coordinator
The SAHABAT SERU coaches are advised by the unit SERU who will be responsible for the management and development of the program. SERU shall provide support and guidance to the SAHABAT SERU through regular basis workshops, team meetings, one-on-ones and communicate via email, if necessary.
Benefits
This program offers SAHABAT SERU an opportunity to develop a number of professional competencies including enhancing:
  • interpersonal skills: understanding people better and motivating others
  • leadership skills: communication, team-building and networking of friends
Awards
All SAHABAT SERU will be awarded merit points, certificate of leadership and other forms of appreciation that SERU deems fit.
